AUSTRIAN MINT COIN: The “Legends” Continue

[VIENNA, AUSTRIA] The Austrian Mint has issued the second silver coin in the “Legends of Austria” series: the story—and legend—of King Richard’s capture.

History has it that Richard the Lionheart offended Duke Leopold V of Austria. Richard was shipwrecked in the Adriatic Sea while returning home from the Crusades, so he traveled over land. He cut through Duke Leopold’s lands without permission and was imprisoned at Duernstein.

Legend has it that one of King Richard’s favorite minstrels, Blondel, traveled throughout Europe in search of his master, singing songs that he and his king had composed together. The king heard Blondel and replied in key from his fortress. Eventually, the duke was paid a huge ransom and King Richard was released.

Collectors in the U.S. and Canada may purchase the 10-euro silver coin for $42.00 US for the proof edition and $32.00 US for the special uncirculated variation by calling Euro Collections International toll-free at 1-877-897-7696. The coin may also be ordered online at www.eurocollections.com.
