Rare El Salvador Coin Crosses into Professional Coin Grading Service Holder
The coin-grading firm recently graded an outstanding 1914 El Salvador Proof Peso that hammered for $18,000 in 2021
Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) recently graded a very rare 1914 El Salvador Proof Peso that was last publicly seen in 2021 when it sold for $18,000 in an alternate service’s holder.
“We’re always honored when collectors entrust us to encapsulate their rare coins, including those they earlier purchased in holders from other grading companies,” said PCGS President Stephanie Sabin. “There are many reasons collectors elect to cross their coins into PCGS holders, such as maximizing the value, security, and liquidity of their coins. Ultimately, the best coins always end up in PCGS holders.”
The mintage of the 1914 El Salvador Proof Peso is estimated (but not confirmed) to be just 20 pieces. The coins were struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia and carry an obverse portrait of explorer Christopher Columbus and reverse motif bearing the nation’s coat of arms. The coin was designed by Charles Barber, the same engraver whose namesake “Barber” coinage includes the United States dime, quarter, and half dollar of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
As the coin’s owner, collector Brian Boosi, reports, the El Salvador peso was part of a four-denomination set also consisting of the 5, 10, and 25 centavos. “The sets originally came in cases lined with blue velvet that, when left intact, imparted a beautiful tone as shown on this piece,” he said.
“With a mintage of roughly 20, examples of this coin – especially ones so attractive – rarely appear on the market. In the last 50 years, roughly one to two coins come to market per decade,” he said, adding that just eight examples have been traded at public auction or in known private transactions since 1975. Boosi said that he “couldn’t pass up on the opportunity” to acquire his specimen when it came up for sale in the 2021 Heritage Auctions offering. “This coin combines both rarity and aesthetics, and is perfect for my Latin American crown set.”
